Teaching Philosophy & What to Expect in Lessons

My philosophy of music education is to inspire, encourage, and to bring out each students full potential. I strive to build a studio community where each student can foster friendships, have fun and can encourage each other. I encourage each student to try all styles of music (from classical to jazz to pop to contemporary music to improvisation). In addition, I teach music theory and music history to go with the music they are studying.

I tailor lessons to each individual student; as we all learn differently and at a different pace. I want my students to grow as a balanced musician and person. In addition to weekly lessons, I teach multi-level group classes once a month on topics relating to flute and music. I also encourage and coach collaborative ensembles to give students experience playing and performing with others.

I expect hard work, great attitudes and regular practice from my students. Students with these characteristics can expect a rewarding and fulfilling musical experience in my studio. I also encourage parental support as their involvement is crucial for the growth of my younger students.

Performance is very important, as music is a performing art. I encourage students to perform each year in a Holiday Concert in December and a Spring Studio Recital and will let all know of other performing opportunities (including competitions, performing in church, nursing homes, festivals, etc.).

So in a nutshell...
Through weekly private lessons, frequent group classes, ensemble collaborations, recitals, summer projects, and more - our focus is not just to learn the mechanics of the flute and music but to become a well-rounded musician and individual who support and encourage others in our quest to be the best we can.

Happy Fluting!
